INTRODUCTION
Electroforming is one of three different techniques utilising the process of deposition of metals by electrolysis (electro-deposition). Before discussing the technical details of electroforming it is important to define each of these three uses. 1 Electroplating Describes the process of depositing a thin layer of a more noble metal onto a less noble one, or even over a non conductor, for decorative or protective reasons. 2 Heavy Deposition Describes the process of depositing a layer of substantial thickness, often selectively, over an object to which it remains permanently attached. Frequently used as a repairing process, when an excess of metal is deposited over a worn component, which is subsequently machined back to its original dimension. 3 Electroforming Describes a manufacturing process in which a layer of metal, thick enough to be self supporting, is deposited into a mould, or over a mandrel, which is normally removed, leaving an object made entirely by electro-deposition. |
