1840 - The Electroplating Technique

Cheaper method of plating, patented by George and Henry Elkington from Birmingham.

Process outlined involved the use of an immersion gold bath based on gold chloride and neutralised in potassium bicarbonate. The bath was a vastly superior to the usual water gilding methods, produced a very even and uniform colour and could equal in thickness the thinner deposit achieved by mercury gilding.

Silver plating of products using electroplating technique was established.

Electrodeposited nickel was used to plate watches, clocks and machine parts.
